Have you ever listened to Coldplay's 'Viva la Vida' while you gazed out of an airplane window, at the setting Sun high in the sky? It is a profound experience.

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

Viva la Vida is a song based on regret and repentance. As I listen to it, I can't help but review past mistakes. I was such a dusch. :) But yes, I also wonder at the wonders of life.

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

It was a majestic sight. All I couls see was fluffy clouds bathed in a deep orange light. At the horizon there was a briliant Sun, in all its setting glory, sendings rivers of orange all over the sky.

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

The plane started to descend. I could see small sharp pricks of light down below. The Earth was beginning to light up.

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

I could make out tall buildings and wide grounds.

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

Roads. Lit on the sides. Snaking, coiling. Hundreds of cars, moving slowly. The early evening traffic. Home.

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

I listened and watched, eyes wide with wonder, everything else quite forgotten. Es war wie ein Traum.

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

The flight captain's voice broke the reverie. 'We will soon be arriving at the airport. The emparature outside is 26 degrees.' Snap – and back to the real world. Damn!
